What is the WellO2 Steam Breathing Trainer?
WellO2 is a breathing exercise device that combines warm steam with adjustable inspiratory and expiratory breathing resistance.
Guided breathing exercises help strengthen the breathing muscles, while warm steam helps open and moisturise the airways during training.
Adjustable resistance and three steam temperature settings make WellO2 suitable for beginners and experienced users alike.
Many people use WellO2 as part of their daily respiratory wellness routine, voice care, sports training, or evening breathing exercises.
How does WellO2 work?
WellO2 combines adjustable breathing resistance with warm steam in one simple breathing exercise.
As you exhale into the device, your breath creates warm steam inside the water chamber. When you inhale back through the device, the warm steam is naturally released into your airways.
Throughout the exercise, both inhalation and exhalation take place against gentle, adjustable resistance to strengthen the inspiratory and expiratory breathing muscles, while the warm steam helps open and moisturise the airways.
Where can I buy the WellO2 breathing trainer?
You can buy the WellO2 breathing trainer from the WellO2 online store at wello2.uk.

If you have a medical condition or are unsure whether WellO2 is suitable for you, consult your healthcare professional before starting breathing exercises.
Who is WellO2 training not suitable for?
Do not use the device if you have had:
- Pneumothorax
- A recent disease or injury of the tympanic membrane
- A recent surgical operation on your head, chest or abdomen
If you are unsure whether WellO2 is suitable for you, consult your healthcare professional before beginning breathing exercises.
Can I use WellO2 if I'm unwell?
If you have a mild respiratory infection without fever and already use WellO2 regularly, many people choose to continue gentle breathing exercises using the lowest resistance setting.
Keep the sessions short and always listen to your body. If breathing exercises increase discomfort or cause pain, stop using the device and consult your healthcare professional.
If you're starting WellO2 for the first time, it is generally better to begin once you have recovered.
Can I use WellO2 if I have a long-term respiratory condition?
Many people with long-term respiratory conditions include WellO2 as part of their daily breathing exercise routine.
Guided breathing exercises help strengthen the breathing muscles, while warm steam helps open and moisturise the airways.
If you have a diagnosed respiratory condition or receive ongoing treatment, consult your healthcare professional before starting any new breathing exercise programme.
Can I use WellO2 if I have allergies?
Many people choose to use WellO2 during allergy season as part of their daily breathing routine.
Warm steam helps moisturise the airways during breathing exercises, while regular breathing training helps strengthen the breathing muscles.
If you use allergy medication, continue using it according to your healthcare professional's advice.
Can I use WellO2 if I have COPD, asthma or another respiratory condition?
Many people living with respiratory conditions include breathing exercises as part of their daily routine.
WellO2 combines warm steam with breathing resistance to strengthen the breathing muscles and support everyday respiratory wellness.
Because everyone's situation is different, we recommend discussing breathing exercises with your healthcare professional before starting if you have a diagnosed respiratory condition.
Can WellO2 training reduce snoring?
Many people who snore include WellO2 in their evening routine.
Using the nasal mask allows warm steam and breathing resistance to be directed through the nose while exercising. Exhaling through the nose against gentle resistance helps train the muscles involved in nasal breathing.
Many users report improvements in their nighttime breathing and snoring after regular use. Individual experiences vary.
Can children use WellO2?
Yes. Children can use WellO2 under adult supervision.
We recommend starting with the lowest resistance and lowest steam temperature. If needed, the device can remain on a table while using the extension hose or nasal mask.
Children under 12 should always use the device under adult supervision.
Can I use WellO2 during pregnancy?
Many people use breathing exercises during pregnancy as part of their daily wellness routine.
During pregnancy we recommend using the lowest resistance setting and always listening to your body.
If you have any concerns, consult your healthcare professional before beginning breathing exercises.
Is there research behind WellO2?
Yes. WellO2 is based on established principles of breathing resistance training combined with warm steam inhalation.
Clinical studies have shown improvements in inspiratory muscle strength following regular WellO2 training. You can learn more on our Clinical Evidence page.
My doctor is not familiar with the WellO2 device – what should I do?
You can tell your doctor about the basic principles of the WellO2 device, which combine breathing training against resistance with warm steam inhalation.
In WellO2 training, you breathe against resistance during both inhalation and exhalation, and the level of resistance can be smoothly adjusted to suit your needs. As you inhale, the device generates warm steam, with the temperature selectable from three different settings. The WellO2 device allows for training to be conducted through either the mouth or the nose, offering flexibility in how you choose to use it.
Resistance breathing devices are commonly used in hospitals for rehabilitation, for example, to support mucus clearance treatments. In these devices, the breathing resistance is usually less than 20 cmH2O. The breathing resistance of the WellO2 device ranges from a minimum of 15 cmH2O to a maximum of 120 cmH2O. Thus, the WellO2 device offers higher resistance, which activates the muscles for both exhalation and inhalation, increasing their strength.
The principle of exhalation in the WellO2 device is similar to the use of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). It expands small constricted airways, enhances gas exchange, and calms and deepens breathing.
Inhalation resistance enhances chest mobility and increases available space in the lungs. It also effectively activates respiratory muscles, especially the diaphragm, and improves breathing technique.
The warm steam from the WellO2 breathing trainer increases moisture balance in the upper airways and moisturizes and rehabilitates the respiratory mucosa. Additionally, it enhances the function of cilia in the respiratory tract.

Hygiene and Safety
Can the WellO2 device be used by multiple people?
Yes. WellO2 is designed for shared use when each user has their own personal mouthpiece and the cleaning programme is run between users.
The package includes three different coloured mouthpieces for easy identification. The remaining parts of the device can be shared after cleaning according to the user instructions.
Can respiratory infections spread between users?
The WellO2 device includes a dedicated cleaning programme for hygienic shared use.
When the cleaning programme is used between users and each person has their own mouthpiece, the device is designed to be safely shared within a household.
For best hygiene, always use fresh drinking water for every session, empty the water tank after use, and follow the cleaning instructions in the user manual.
Is inhaling warm steam safe?
Yes. WellO2 uses warm steam together with guided breathing exercises. The device has three adjustable steam temperature settings, allowing you to choose the level that feels most comfortable.
If you're using WellO2 for the first time, we recommend starting with the lowest temperature setting and increasing it gradually as you become accustomed to the warm steam.
Can water accumulate in the lungs?
No. The warm steam produced during WellO2 breathing exercises does not fill the lungs with water. Only a very small amount of moisture is inhaled during each session, where it naturally helps moisturise the airways.
For comparison, people are exposed to warm steam in everyday situations such as taking a hot shower or using a sauna.
Does hot steam kill viruses or bacteria?
The WellO2 cleaning programme heats the water in the device to boiling temperature to help clean the internal water system after use.
The cleaning programme is intended to maintain device hygiene between users.
What about Legionella?
Always use fresh, cold drinking water with your WellO2 device.
Empty the water tank after every session and do not leave water standing inside the device.
Run the cleaning programme regularly and whenever the device has been used by another person. Following these simple steps helps keep the device clean and ready for use.
WellO2 Breathing Training
How do I use the WellO2 device?
Using WellO2 is simple.
Fill the device with fresh drinking water, select your preferred steam temperature and breathing resistance, and allow the water to heat up.
Before starting your breathing exercises, exhale into the device a few times until the water begins to bubble. This creates warm steam inside the water chamber. As you inhale back through the device, the warm steam is naturally released into your airways.
During each exercise, exhale gently through the device and then inhale back through it. Both inhalation and exhalation take place against adjustable resistance to train the breathing muscles.
For detailed instructions, please refer to the WellO2 user manual or watch our instructional videos here: Instructions >>
How do I get started with WellO2 training?
When using WellO2 for the first time, start with the lowest steam temperature and the lowest resistance setting (0).
Perform 1–10 comfortable breathing repetitions, then rest if needed before continuing. Repeat the exercise for 2–3 sets, always focusing on slow, controlled breathing rather than the number of repetitions.
As you become more familiar with the device, you can gradually increase both the resistance and steam temperature to match your comfort level.
We recommend using WellO2 twice a day during your first month to build a consistent breathing routine.
What breathing exercises can I do?
WellO2 can be used for a variety of guided breathing exercises depending on your goals.
The WellO2 App includes breathing programmes for:
- Daily breathing exercises
- Respiratory muscle training
- Sports routines
- Voice training
- Nasal breathing exercises
- Evening breathing and relaxation routines
Follow the exercises that best suit your routine and always breathe at a comfortable pace.
How often should I use WellO2?
For best results, we recommend using WellO2 regularly.
During your first month, aim to train twice a day – for example, in the morning and evening – or at least once a day if that better fits your routine.
After the first month, many people continue training several times a week to maintain their breathing routine.
There is no maximum recommended frequency. You can use WellO2 as often as feels comfortable, adjusting the resistance and steam temperature to your own preferences. As with any exercise, consistency is more important than intensity.
Can I add salt or essential oils?
No. We do not recommend adding salt to the WellO2 device.
The WellO2 Steam Breathing Trainer is designed to be used with fresh drinking water only.
Some users choose to add heat-vaporising essential oils at their own discretion. If you do so, ensure they are intended for inhalation and do not contain ingredients that may irritate the airways.
Always empty the water tank and rinse the device after each use.
